On the eve of Thanksgiving some twelve years ago, I wrapped a pie in an apron with a handwritten note of sympathy slipped into the pocket, and delivered it to a neighbor experiencing more heartbreak than should be. Her response of delight and warmth was unexpected and very touching.

In offering a small gesture of recognition to the family’s situation, I was surprised at the unexpected joyfulness that I experienced. The win-win of the exchange was so memorable, I knew it had to be shared. So I created TIE ONE ON DAY™.

Celebrated on the eve of Thanksgiving – Wednesday, November 25 this year – TIE ONE ON DAY is an annual opportunity to share our good fortune by wrapping a loaf of bread or other baked good in domestic cloth and tuck in a sweet note; then tie one on…an apron, of course! and deliver the offering to a neighbor, friend or charity in need of a bit of kindness.

Tie One On Day received a major shout-out by AP Reporter, Jennifer Forker ! http://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/thanksgiving-handmade-apron-20862831 . Jennifer’s reportage will appear nationwide over the next two weeks. Thank you, Jennifer, for including me and TOOD in this so-sweet article.

When entertaining, I enjoy the table-scaping as much as the actual event because it’s such a creative outlet. For a recent fall-ish gathering, I dug out from the stash this quilt topper, which I’ve had forever. Not once making a move toward sewing it to a bottom, I used it as a tablecloth.

The fabric squares date from the late 1930s into the 1950s. The borders aren’t finished, so there are lots of threads dangling, which one day/some day, I will or not get to.

I set out to buy a bouquet for a central vase arrangement, but then I saw
the price of green peppers, 4/$1.00, and instead used those at each place setting. So easy and so beautiful. Love it when a spontaneous inspiration turns out much better than the plan.

Extending kindness is such a great All American impulse!

Last week’s Wednesday Winner, Cyndi Swank, was thrilled of her selection, which she hopes is also a good luck sign for her brother-in-law, who was seriously injured in a car accident.

After skyping for a year with retro rad chef Emily Ellyn, our paths finally crossed while I was visiting my sister in Florida.

Two peas in a vintage pod!

We created a video for Tie One On Day packaging, which you can watch HERE. It includes biscuits from a recipe called HamBob’s out of the Hamery in Murfreesboro, TN. This has to be the easiest, no-fail biscuit to bake. Here’s the goods:

1 cup buttermilk
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup warm water (100F to 110F)
3 to 3 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup shortening

Instructions

Mix buttermilk and baking soda together.
Mix yeast, sugar, salt and water together. Let stand until foamy.
Combine flour and shortening, stirring with a fork until mixed well. Mix in buttermilk mixture. Mix in yeast mixture. (Dough will be wet.) Cover loosely with a kitchen towel and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
Pat out dough to 1/2-inch thickness on a heavily floured board. Cut biscuits with a 2-inch cutter. Place on a baking sheet and let rise 20 minutes.

5. Preheat oven to 400F.

6. Bake biscuits 10 to 12 minutes, until golden brown. Makes about 18 (not sure why, but I get more than 18 with this recipe, and I have to bake a few minute longer for that golden color).

A butter slathered biscuit = the yummiest!

My Tie One On Day recipients are no longer in charge of their own kitchens, so baking for them is an enjoyment from the past. Imagining myself in their shoes, my offerings always include something sweet. As I’m still deciding just what to bake, I’m playing with the packaging.

Last year, I saved up those plastic food (mushroom) containers, which are perfectly sized for lining with toweling and nestling a small sweetbread loaf, a petite jar of jam and a miniature serving spoon.

Another year, I used florist corsage bags to package individual pumpkin pies and old cups (literally a dime a dozen) filled with a cranberry compote. A vintage apron wrapped around an old plate (dime a dozen on these, also) provided stability as well as an eating utility.

In our rush-about world, though, perhaps more meaningful than the creatively packaged food, was visiting at each delivery. I take that to heart and make the time.

Over the summer, we attended a large arts festival, where we entered into numerous drawings for large prize packages. Suffice that the only thing we won was telemarketing ring-a-lings that are impossible to curb. Vintage Patchwork a Modern Design

Although I don’t quilt, I love quilts. To me, a hand sewn quilt is a work of art, the hours spent creating it a testament to the virtue patience.

It is always stunning to me to find quilts in secondhand shops, tossed with the aprons and embroidered toweling as “mother’s old stuff.” This quilt is one so rescued.

As a bed covering, the Dresden pattern brightens the room.

Made up of scraps from the 1930s, it is a marvel. The bittiness and evenness of thousands of stitches defines awesome.

The Dresden design is a happy one, with the variety of fabrics complimenting without effort. I picked up a package of Dresdens that were never used to complete a quilt. I like looking at them, admiring the artistry and industry of the woman who so meticulously created each plate.

But what to do with them?

To the rescue is creative sewer and quilting newbie Erika Mulvenna, who shows the possibilities of this beautiful pattern when applied to an apron.
