A recent publication of Stampington & Company showcased the inspirational work spaces of very creative and successful women. To a one, their areas were extremely tidy, unlike my creative space, which is a mess. I poured over the feature, hoping just one would reveal her secret to organizing and maintaining order within her surroundings, but no.
My creative space is a jumble with the tools of my inspiration and creativity –
aprons, linens, boxes of photographs, files of research, and bins of patterns and magazines and cookbooks of past decades. Every new year, I resolve to replace this chaos with calm. 2009 is but days old, and I see no light at the end of this tunnel. Although I’ve read articles galore on organizing, I don’t seem to know how it is accomplished and maintained. If you do, please, all suggestions to organizing this chaos appreciated!

Tie One On…an apron, of course!
First, let’s get real here – I betcha every one of those ladies spaces looked really different before they worked for a month getting them straightened up for the photographers to come. I mean, really!
Second, I’ve found a few things about organizing these last few days (I’m in the midst of reorganizing my own space!)
1 – it has to look worse before it can look better – kind of like it’s always darkest before the dawn, lol. You can see what I mean on my blog
2 – plastic boxes are my friend
3 – be honest will yourself. Will you ever REALLY use that 1 1/2 x 3/4 inch piece of cardboard/fabric/cardstock/ribbon, etc.

So glad to know that you are just like all of us “creative” individuals. Check out what Cindylouh posted on January 1 at http://www.skiptomylou.org. She also shared pictures of her creative area that will help you not to feel alone. There are lots of suggestions from others on many remedies for our common problem. Or, you can leave things they way they are and you’ll know just where everything is!

Hmmm, If I lived closer I’d pop over w/a bottle of wine and a bunch of decorating magz to thumb through in hopes of gleening some good ideas for re-organizing your “Creativity Room”,,,but I suspect we’d only succeed in finishing off the wine, and never get anything done in the room…oh well, we’d just leave that room/project for another day! lol!
